Slow Start

Weighed in at 274.5 this AM. Ugh. Not what I want to see. Rome wasn't built in a day, so there is still hope for me yet.

I have my highs and lows with cigarette withdrawals, but it has only been a week since I put the pack down. I think my recent gain in weight is tied to the cigarettes. Dunno, maybe. I just need to get my metabolism up and increase my physical activity level. Haven't been to the Y, but there is still time in the week. I plan on a walk this evening, and cooking some pasta.

I am getting about 30 minutes of exercise a day in. Been pretty good about that. I have a set of dumbells at the house and work my upper body with different exercises; curls, presses, arm lifts. I also do sit-ups and push-ups, too. I try to increase my reps by one or two each day. I also change it up so that I am not doing the same exercise each time. I may just do some shadow boxing today while the wife is not around. That's always a good heart raising workout.

I now have the bad habit of reading the labels on all the food I eat. Since I already spent the money, I am gonna eat the bread, smothered in peanut butter, and dipped in jelly. I also have to get rid of the bologna and processed cheese. Guess I'll be eating deli meats and blocks of cheese from now on. Not that I'm complaining or anything. Just going forward, I'll have to be better about reading the labels.

I have only had three cokes this week. I am proudest of that. I had one yesterday morning, another in the afternoon (20oz. bottle), and another this morning as a pick-me-up. Getting it out of my system has left me with headaches, though. Not too bad, but just enough to get me out of sorts. About another week of this and I should be completely off soda as a main form of thirst quencher. I will still have the occasional coke as a treat, and you cannot begrudge me one on Rum & Coke Mondays!

The store is calling my name. I still have to pick up some fresh nibblin' veggies today. Maybe get another bag of pretzels, too. Anyone know of some other healthy but delicious snack options? Granola, pretzels, veggies (carrots, celery), etc. How about drink options? I have tea and milk...water obviously.

Maybe I will have some better results after this weekend.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. I switched to coke zero to lose weight. It tastes a lot better than regular diet and it mixes well.

still, it has that corn syrup in there. That is the key ingredient that keeps the weight on. There is something in there that tricks the mind to think you are still hungry and you keep on eating. At least, that is what I was told. Don't know if it is a myth or not.

We went back to meter reading this week, and I've been filling in for absent people instead of doing supervisor stuff. I figure I burn somewhere around 2,000-2,500 calories per day doing this kind of work. It's a lot easier now than it was a month ago, when it was a lot hotter.

I get ravenously hungry by the end of the day.

Good luck; I had to quit smoking and lose weight after my heart attack. Dropped a lot of the fat in my food to get my cholesterol down to 131, have been spending my spare time exercizing to try and lost weight. Haven't had tobacco since 05/23/05. Sure do miss a good pipe now and then...

Well, I was gonna say "cigarettes", but I guess that's right out.

Give up soda... completely. I was drinking it daily and in large quantities. In 2004, I did not drink a drop. Instead, I drank a cup of tea in the morning for the caffiene. Early New Years day 2005, while everyone else was drinking booze, I was gleefully drinking down a root beer. :) I now only drink soda with pizza which is only once every other month. It's good to have that monkey off my back.
